The houses at 401 and 405 Andry Street are now sporting new rain gardens – thanks to volunteers working with two groups that have been instrumental in local sustainable recovery and rebuilding efforts for the Lower Ninth Ward, Common Ground Relief and Bayou Rebirth.

Rain gardens, installed within the median in front of the Global Green houses, feature native plants and innovative drainage systems to improve storm water management. The 401 Rain Garden was completed in January with the assistance of Steppin Out Adventures and students from St. Catherine University of St. Paul. The 405 Rain Garden went in last month, with help from Cornell University students and Hillel volunteers in town from Ohio and Wisconsin.

Thanks to all – they look beautiful!

More rain gardens are planned as volunteer groups arrive in May.
